The Mazda Brand

Every Mazda stands for «Crafted with Japanese Soul». This maxim reflects dedication and deep respect for the connection between people and what they create. This understanding of Japanese craftsmanship shapes everything we do. Rooted in human needs, guided by precision, care and attention to detail – with the aim of making every journey a special experience.

Our Ethos

For over a century, Mazda has followed its Challenger Spirit: the ambition to create something meaningful from every challenge. Japanese craftsmanship and a spirit of innovation define our actions. That is why at Mazda we do not simply build cars. Every vehicle is crafted with the care and precision of artisans who shape each piece with a skilled hand.

This is how what we call Jinba Ittai comes to life – the unity of driver and vehicle. When a Mazda responds exactly as the driver expects, driving becomes entirely natural.

Our Roots

Mazda and our home city of Hiroshima share more than a common history – they are united by the same spirit. Since our founding in 1920, our company grew alongside a city that was rebuilt after severe destruction.

The Challenger Spirit has accompanied Mazda since those early years. It led to achievements that many considered impossible: from the breakthrough of the rotary engine and victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans to new impulses for the combustion engine.

1920

From cork manufacturer to engineering company

Founded in Hiroshima in 1920 as cork manufacturer Toyo Kogyo Co., Mazda began challenging conventions early on.

1931

Where the Mazda story begins

Toyo Kogyo Co., originally a cork manufacturer and later a producer of machine tools, builds its first series-production vehicle: the three-wheeled truck Mazda-Go.

1945

From destruction to a new beginning

Just four months after the atomic bomb destroyed large parts of Hiroshima, production of commercial vehicles resumes.

1960

The beginning of a new era

With the Mazda R360 Coupé, the company enters the passenger car market. The charming, lightweight 2+2 seater achieves a 65% market share in Japan's then rapidly growing microcar segment and 15% of the entire domestic car market in the same year.

1967

The beginning of a rotary engine tradition

The Mazda Cosmo / 110S becomes the world's first series-production vehicle with a twin-rotor Wankel engine and only the second series model with a rotary engine overall. Mazda was the only car manufacturer to successfully use rotary engines in passenger cars on a commercial scale.

1978

Perfecting the rotary engine

The lightweight, stylish sports coupé Mazda RX-7 makes its debut in Japan. By 2002, more than 800,000 units are sold worldwide, making the Mazda RX-7 the most successful rotary-engined vehicle in history.

1989

The birth of an icon

With the Mazda MX-5, Mazda revives the nearly extinct market for classic roadsters. Based on the concept of Jinba Ittai – «horse and rider as one» – the Mazda MX-5 sets new benchmarks for lightweight construction and an accessible, immediate driving experience.

1991

A victory that changed everything

With the Mazda 787B, one of the greatest achievements in rotary engine history is accomplished: the race car wins the 24 Hours of Le Mans – to this day the only victory at this legendary race for a vehicle with a pistonless engine.

2000

Record holder

With 532,000 vehicles sold, Guinness World Records officially declares the Mazda MX-5 the best-selling two-seat sports car in the world – a record the model holds to this day.

2016

One million and beyond

The one-millionth Mazda MX-5, a fourth-generation model, rolls off the production line at the Ujina 1 plant in Hiroshima.

2020

Mazda celebrates 100 years of innovation

From cork manufacturer in Hiroshima to global car maker: in 2020, Mazda celebrates a century of innovation, pioneering design and technical development.

2022

The Mazda CX‑60 PHEV comes to Europe

With the Mazda CX-60 PHEV, Mazda brings its first plug-in hybrid model to the European market.

2026

Mazda6e: World Car Design of the Year 2026

The Mazda6e has been awarded the World Car Design of the Year 2026, recognising Mazda's modern interpretation of the «Kodo – Soul of Motion» design philosophy for an electric future.
